Hello Travelers Below the Bible Belt -
“It is the prophets who teach us that the problem of living does not arise with the question of how to take care of the rascals, of how to prevent delinquency or hideous crimes. The problem of living begins with the realization of how we all blunder in dealing with our fellow humans.”
A. J. Heschel
Prophets, past and present, help lead our patient path to peace and progress.
Over 80 of us met online this past MLK WKND to begin this course by exploring the wisdom of the prophets - learning some of the stories, secrets and surprising history and herstory of prophetic voices including Amos, MLK Jr., Heschel and Hulda - the last prophetess of Jerusalem.
It was a great launch to our year-long journey to explore the lesser known historical schism that explains how the Jewish people got to be so deeply divided now, how we can lift up the dignity of difference, and what may helps us reimagine common ground despite these storied divides.
Check out the video recording of the session:
The recording includes 60 min. of teaching by me, along with guest teacher Rev. Derrick McQueen, followed by 30 min. of Q&A.
You can also access the source sheet - including some fantastic sources we didn’t get to during the session, esp. the creative midrash by Rabbi Arthur Waskow of blessed memory on the imagined story of the Prophetess Hulda - and how she certified the canon - and changed the course of history.
