Canaan in Connecticut??

Weekly Overview of Below the Bible Belt
1

Welcome to Canaan - in Connecticut?? Ancient Semitic/ biblical meets Native American memory as we blend boundaries and traditions, names and locations —

Welcome to below the Bible Belt where this week we question the solidity of borders and boundaries and how we blur and flow with each other , mixing and reinventing our identities in more ways than rigid religious national narratives would like us to believe and hold on to.

This week in the book of Joshua it was surprising to find out that even Caleb and his family are both Israelites AND canaanites , and even the inspiration for the mishkan, tent of meeting, the sacred center of the Israelites, is inspired and influenced by Canaanite customs of worship-how to build temporary, fluid tents to contain the ever evolving sacred.

As we turn towards ending the book of Joshua in a week it is humbling to know that our origins and our future Are rooted in our present ability to be fully open to the multiplicity of identities - with dignity and respect to every story that is celebrated and the blessing of diversity in the spirit of one.

Shabbat shalom- from Canaan Connecticut.
