Ceremonial Compost Time!

Weekly Overview of Below the Bible Belt
1

Today I bless my backyard compost!

This is the day we recycle sacred time, letting an entire year go into the bin - with gratitude.  Holy shit.  Go make new flowers.

Today we welcome the last Shabbat of 5782 and with it goodbye to the Shmita year - the Seventh year of Release. What does this have to do with Below the Bible Belt? Well, the last few chapters of The Book of Words pick up the theme of sacred time and sacred space - as these two calendars converge again - our 3+year cycle of re-reading the Bible - and the Jewish calendar.

It’s about transitional and liminal space.

In Chapter 11 that we read this past Wednesday, Moses reminds us that the Promised Land is under divine surveillance  24/7 - from the start of the year till its end. This Orwellian note is meant to remind us that what we do matters and that we are accountable for how we treat the earth, ourselves, and each other.

For all of us all over the world - what are the ways we will commit to honor earth - our promised land - in this new year? What words of honest intention will we write and speak as this new year begins?

How will we walk the talk of being sacred people created in divine image - co-creators of a better world - everywhere?

I don't know about divine surveillance but I do know that this Book of Words reminds me today to pay attention to the words I speak, the things I do, and how to end one year and start another with more love and patience.

Same to you! Wishing us all a farewell to Shmita, Shabbat Shalom and Shana Tova!

See you next week.
