Did Jews Invent Guilt?

Guilt! A human hardship, yet how did it become heavily associated with Jews? 

Molly Jong-Fast, American Jewish author, wrote that “we suffer two great inheritances of the Jewish people: irritable bowel syndrome and guilt.”  There are a few more, but interestingly, her observation links those two heirlooms together - Jewish guilt may have its origins in the historically sacred ways we eat and publicly ritualize our problems.  The temple technology of sacrifices included an innovative idea in the ancient world - sacrificial options for all forms of atonement - including collective responsibility and personal guilt. In most pagan temples, deities demanded and got grateful offerings, plus prayers for help, but guilty offerings were very rare. 

Someone in Mishkan HQ had the brilliant idea to make guilt as gifts to God accessible to all people. It got big. 

Chapters 1-3 of Va’Yikra list the types of offerings familiar in  the old world  temples:  Thanks, Wow, Please - protection taxes to the priesthood. But chapters 4-5 offer the new Hebraic ‘Guilt and Sin’ options, with elaborate, specific  details for how one can be absolved of intentional or intentional harm. Today’s Chapter focuses on Asham - the guilt offerings. It’s always a male ram, no other options, no matter the crime. And it includes this odd verse that may have been a priestly incantation that accompanied the moment of slaughter: “This is an Asham/guilt-offering, you are guilty, this is guilt in the presence of God.” (Va:5:19)

Unlike other sacrifices - presiding priests got most of the meat from the guilt offerings.  Maybe that’s why they promoted this new line of offerings in such detail here? Marketing a new way to address angst AND make sure they have enough to eat? Maybe Molly is right and that’s where our inter-generational guilt comes from?  

And in the absence of temple rites, how do we handle guilt? Minor messes can be mended in therapy or with sincere apologies ( Lizzo’s recent apology a case in point) but how do individuals and communities handle the collective, often inter-generational and complex layers of guilt that come from being part of oppressive, racist, privileged systemic realities?  Maybe we need to reimagine public rituals, beyond civic and legal, that help us handle our baggage in neutral contexts where there is no extra benefit or gain? 

תחושות אשם הם חלק מהרפרטואר האנושי - אז איך הרגש הזה נהיה מזוהה עם יהודים?? מולי ג׳ומג-פאסט, סופרת יהודיה-אמריקאית כתבה פעם ״אנחנו כיהודים סובלים משתי ירושות - בעיות עיכול ותחושות אשמה.״  יש יותר ברשימת הירושה אבל מעניין ששני האתגרים שהיא מזכירה כרוכים  היסטורית יחדיו - ואולי כאן מקור העניין: האופן בו אני חולקים משון והטקסים הפומביים דרכם אנחנו מטפלים בבעיות שיש בהן בושה ואשמה. 

זה מתחיל במשכן שבו המציאו סוג חדש של קרבן שלא היה מוכר בעולם העתיק. רוב הקורבנות המוכרים במקדשים פגניים הוקדשו לאלים ואלות שזכו לתודה, שבח, בקשות ותחינות. היהודים  כנראה המציאו את קרבנות החטא והאשם. זה נהיה מאד פופולרי. 

פרקים א-ג מתארים את סוגי הקרבנות  שהיו כנראה מוכרים. בפרקים ד׳ וה׳ הפוקוס הוא על החטאת והאשם - המצאה חדשה שהייתה צריכה שכנוע. בין אם מדובר בשוגג או במזיד - ויש פירוט רב, קרבן אשם הוא תמיד אייל. ואת רוב הבשר מקבלים הכהנים -- שלא כמו בקרבנות האחרים בהם הם מקבלים מעט, אם בכלל. גם עש הרבה פאתוס בפרק - כולל הפסוק הבא שיש טוענים שהיה סוג של דקלום דרמטי-דתי  שהוקרא בעת השחיטה: ״אָשָׁ֖ם ה֑וּא אָשֹׁ֥ם אָשַׁ֖ם לַיהֹוָֽה׃״

אולי הכהנים רצו עוד בשר ומימון ומישהו המציא את רעיון קרבן האשם כדרך לתת לאנשים מוצר רגשי רוחני -- ולדאוג בו זמנית לפרנסת הכהנים? ואולי זה מקור האשם היהודי?? 

במציאות בה אין לנו מקדש, ועבירות מקבלות מקום בטיפול פסיכולוגי או בתי המשפט -- עדיים אנחנו זקוקים לטקסים בהם יש עדות ושחרור, סליחה ותמיכה. במיוחד במקרים בהם רגשות האשם שלנו קשורים בהיותנו חלק ממערכת אנושית מפלה וגזענית, אכזרית וחומרנית? יהיה מעניין לשחזר או להמציא את הטקסים החדשים, מעבר לבתי המשפט, שיש בהם אפשרות לשחרור האשם?
