Don't Deny Death

Weekly Overview of Below the Bible Belt
2

How do we deal with death? Denial and distance? Acceptance of inevitable truth? Healthy balance of both?

If there is one common denominator to the chapters we reviewed this past week below the Bible belt in the book of words and how they meet these days on Jewish calendar - it is about the violent threat of death, And sometimes, the even more violent consequences of a death inflicted by one person upon another.

These chapters describe what happens when we wage War, when corpses turn up in ץour backyard, and lust laws for executing those who threaten the order of things-according to this Mosaic mindset.

Maybe it’s no accident the book that will soon describe the death of Moses is so obsessed with the fear of dying as it tries to encourage us to live our lives and the most sacred and fulfilled way?

With the day of atonement just behind us the convergence of these narratives perhaps want to help us make life more meaningful every single day not with fear of death but with appreciation of its finality and the commitment to truly live each day as best we can.
