Biblical BBQ anyone? Peace-offerings, the sacrificial selection specified in chapter 3, can be cattle, goats or sheep, either gender, brought by regular people, for various good reasons, to feast together in the presence of the Divine. It’s called peace-offering, S’hlamim, to mark its purpose of celebrating life’s wholeness, perhaps as a grateful prayer for peace. It may also be derived from a less poetic purpose, something like ‘member dues’, a communal opportunity for sponsored shared protein - not a small feat of a treat back then. Still a treat today.
Before the animal is ceremoniously slaughtered by a certified priest, those who brought it place their hands on its head and pray. The blood is drawn by the priests on the altar corners. Then the ritual roasting begins.
Unlike other offerings that burn whole on the altar, on third of the peace-offering animal is roasted and eaten by those gathered, another third- chest and thigh, specifically, taxed to the priests who preside, the last third - the entrails + fat - burnt on the altar for Creator to appreciate the sizzling aroma.
YHWH favors the fat. But it’s forbidden for the Jews. This enigmatic paradox has baffled biblical and culinary scholars. The elaborate details regarding which fats and entrails burn for God, and in what order, also distinguish between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ fats -- but the generic law showing up here, totally trims the fat: “A law for the ages, all generations and:*All fat and blood is forbidden to eat.”(Va 3:17)
Why forbid the fat?
We get the blood taboo, but fat is complicated because actually not all animal fat is forbidden according to kosher law - there’s categories. In this original context, fat echoes the ancient human impulse to thank life with the gift of abundance and life. When Cain and Abel begin this human tradition in the beginning - it’s Abel’s fat offering that pleases God, who favors this gift over Cain’s vegetables. Fat becomes a sacrificed symbolic substance, a desirable delicacy, given up and offered up by folks like us, with intentions and grateful hopes for blessing of peace etc. from above, in return. By giving up what we love most we ask for the same from the source, from each other.
In our unfortunately fatphobic reality, fat's superior and exclusive status is fascinating and important, even as the law forbidding us from eating some fatty animal ingredients remains a reminder for healthier and conscious lives. Our relationship with fat, meat, sacred nourishment, privately and in public, remains a work in progress. Writing in the early 20th century, Rabbi Kook, who preached for vegetarianism (but suggesting shared sacred protein on Shabbat) interpreted the fat ban this way:
"We are permitted to slaughter these animals for their meat, to give us energy and strength, but … we should not kill them merely for the pleasure of eating their fatty meat, so pleasurable to the palate of the gastronome."
I love a good BBQ. But when it comes to good fat, how about an avocado?
