Kingmaking in Jerusalem

Weekly Overview of Below the Bible Belt
1

Did King David really exist? Scholars still debate but popular myth, tourist attractions and political reality on the ground in Jerusalem and all through Israel and Palestine air no doubts, whatever the consequences. Some archeological finds support the claim even if it may be that it was a much more modest kingdom that the Bible imagines.

What seems clear is that monarchy is the way the Northern state of Israel and the Southern state of Judah rose to power and was eventually erased by greater powers — for hundreds of years. A lot of the dynastic dramas was in Jerusalem - the city where today the heat is still on and a new leader was just elected prime minister. Some say Bibi is King - with 30 years on and off in power. Oppressive - and impressive. Time will tell.

Why do people want a strong man in power? Patriarchal norms is the short answer. It’s complicated.

Even since the Book of Samuel people and thinkers keep debating what is the best form of government, what’s the best for safety and which is the least harmful to human happiness and freedom.

Why a king? Join us next week as we meet Saul, the first tragic hero of the Hebrew monarchy. Hardly the last. The comforting aspect of this Below the Bible Belt journey is that we see the trends, long arc, slow build, and deep hope for better, whoever is in charge.

Love from East Jerusalem, with hopes for peaceful days. Shabbat Shalom
