Pig: Pagan Pollution or Passion?

In a complex world of human wrongs and rights, truths and taboos, argued over, abused, outlawed and negotiated: When did pigs become a problem? 

Or, in other words, what’s the sudden switch from the first ten chapters in the third book of the Torah, where the focus on sacred sacrifices, human loss, and the aftermath of death become all of the sudden an elaborate list of laws detailing dietary prohibitions of the ancient Jews, pork included, in chapter 11? Why pork (plus rabbit, camel, and more) is off the plate is an interesting historical riddle in itself, but the key here may be the transition from chapters dealing with priestly procedures of the sanctuary to regulations that impact every person’s daily domestic routine.  Chapter 11 begins with YHWH instructing both Moses and Aaron to transmit the message to the entire population:

 “Speak to the Children of Israel: These are the living-creatures that you may eat, from all the domesticated animals that are upon the earth:” (Va 11:2) and the list goes on to describe what’s taboo or not. Although the instruction here is for the entire community, many scholars, including Mary Douglas, whose epic research “Leviticus as Literature” changes the genre, claim that originally the food laws, and the sex laws that are coming up next,  were only intended for the priests - an extension of their sacred duties, seperating them from the people and form secular, mundane limitations. Only in the 5th century BCE, as Judeans return to Zion from their Babylonian exile and reconstruct their religion, do these laws become adapted to the population - all the people perceived as priests, united in identity against assimilation with the local pagan culture- perceived as pollution.  The word kosher is not mentioned in this chapter but these laws create a seperatist  social-gastronomic culture, claimed Douglas, and were used as an instrument for keeping apart different classes of the same population. They tend to be applied in favor of a category that deems itself superior but threatened by the claims of lower elements.” 

Douglas has much more to say about how Leviticus became a set of rules for the people, not just priests, and how the Mishkan is a micro of the macro of cosmological consciousness, but that’s for another time. As for pigs, the most common claim is that they were important and even sacred to the indiginous cultures, thus, a problem. In the famous pioneering study of near eastern myth, The Golden Bough, Sir James George Frazer suggests that pigs are among "All so-called unclean animals were originally sacred. . . The reason for not eating them is that many were originally divine." Archeological findings prove that Philistines loved pigs, whose bones were found in ancient altars, unlike those of their neighboring Hebrews. 

Perhaps the key term linking the previous chapters with this one is the word ‘divide’ used in chapter 10 to instruct the priests in more careful, sober conduct between sacred and daily duties, and used here to demand different menus and culinary choices.  Taboo or not taboo, thousands of years later, who and how we eat still dictates who and how we are, pagan, political, perhaps more attuned to what’s sacred and healthy in our personal and public lives.

כמו למשל: מה הקטע עם חזיר? או, במילים אחרות, איך קפצנו מחוקי הכהנים וטרגדיית מות בני אהרן לפרק מלא פירוט טכני של מה מותר או אסור לאכילה?  ייתכן והקישור תלוי באפשרות שגם חוקי הכשרות ( המושג ׳כשר׳ לא מופיעה עדיין בהקשר המקראי הזה) היו במקורם מיועדים רק לשבט לוי המשרתים בקודש ועם הזמן הפכו לציווי לנחלת הכלל.  כולל איסור החזיר. הכל קשור בהפרדה הבדלה בין מציאות אחת לאחרת, מטעמי שמירה על הקודש ועל הזהות.  הפרק מתחיל בציווי ברור להנחיל תפריט טהור לכל העם: ״דַּבְּר֛וּ אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר זֹ֤את הַֽחַיָּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֹּאכְל֔וּ מִכׇּל־הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃״

החוקרת הדגולה מרי דאגלס, ששילבה אנתרופולוגיה והיסטוריה בחקר המקרא ובמיוחד בספר ויקרא מציעה שההרחבה של חוקי המזון והמין לכלל האוכלוסיה התרחשה במאה ה6 לפנה״ס, כחלק משיבת ציון והנסיון של הכהנים לייצר אחידות דתית ולאומית ע״י אימוץ חוקיהם לכולם. לא כל החוקרים מסכימים איתה אבל יש הגיון בחיבור הפרקים ובאבולציה של חוקי טומאה וטוהרה מתוך המשכן לכלל האומה. מילת המפתח היא ״להבדיל״ - המושג מופיע בפרק י להנחיל התנהגות נאותה ולהבדיל בין חול וקודש במשכן למניעת מוות מיותר נוסף - ושוב בפרק זה כדי להבדיל בין סוגי מזון שונים.  גם החזיר כנראה יושב על סוגיית ההבדלה - כחיה שע״פ חוקרים כמו פרייזר היה במקור חיה מקודשת לעמים המקומיים ובשל כך נאסר ע״י ישראל. בחפירות ארכיאולוגיות נמצאו עצמות חזיר רבות במזבחות פלשתיים אבל לא באלה של שכניהם העבריים. בין אם מדובר בפולחן ו/או פוליטיקה של זהויות ברור שמה שנוצר עם השנים הוא יצירת מרחב מקודש - כמו המשכן והמקדש - במטבח הפרטי בו כל אדם הוא כהן וכל עקרת בית הכהנת הגדולה. כך מיצרים קודש ביתי וציבורי, על כל מעלותיו ואתגריו, הבריאותיים, הדתיים, והעדתיים.  איך זה נראה אצלכם על הצלחת?
