Some days, like today, are a threshold between seasons. Some thresholds combine space and time. Aaron and his sons spend seven days at the threshold: liminal presence of becoming. The word liminal comes from the word in Latin “limen,” which means threshold, or transition. The consecration of the Cohens and the activation of the Mishkan is a full week, held at the entrance to the tent of time, echoing the mythic creation of the world.
It begins with blood. Two rams and an ox are sacrificed, the blood smeared on the new uniforms, and then - mysteriously - on the right ear lobe, thumb and big toe of Aaron and his four sons. Pressure points perhaps?
Their heads and beards are anointed with oil, as is the altar, the men becoming like limbs of the shrine, an organic unit of mortal and matter, a man-made meeting place of human and divine.
For seven days they live in liminal space, literally forbidden from leaving the threshold of the tent, on public display.
“You are to stay at the threshold of the Tent of Time, day and night, for seven days; you are to guard the YHWH guard, so that you do not die, for thus I have been commanded.” (Va 8:35)
For seven days they are at the threshold, reflecting on their previous lives as ordinary men as they prepare for their future as extraordinary leaders, in the in-between of sacred and profane, ready to risk their lives for their community. Not all of them will make it and they might even know it - aware of the threat, of the danger of being so close to the divine. On some level, that week is the first held Shiva in our history -- seven days of mourning before an actual death has occured. Perhaps, like the creation of the world, this too is a threshold to a new reality, with loss and life, like blood and oil, forever intertwined. Where do we encounter this threshold in our own inner lives?
