“No story begins with seems to begin; the roots of the tree are hidden from the eye, but they reach down to the waters.”
This begins the book that changed my life back in my late teens, giving me a glimpse into the propaganda of prophecy and the political manipulation of scriptures. It’s much more than meets the eye.
Dissident East German author Stephen Heym published this book in 1987, as “both an analysis of the writer's obligations to truth, and an astute satire on the workings of history and politics in a totalitarian state.”
As we delve deeper into the David saga I’m excited to re- read it, 30(!!) years later and invite you to add it to our reading list alongside the original. The plot follows the wild attempt by Ethan, king Solomon’s hired court author to tell the official story of King David’s rise to fame, as he “finds another life hidden behind the iron curtain dividing past from present: the story of a David who seduced, lied, bragged, and plundered his way to power.”
