Her name isn’t mentioned in these chapters but the legends tell of Elisheva, Aaron’s wife, an aristocratic lady who on the eighth day proudly celebrated her husband’s elevation and the new roles of her sons. Her day of joy becomes her grief, as her two elder sons, Nadav and Avihu, offer up ‘strange fire’, go off protocol, and are suddenly consumed in flames. The same fire that descends from above to accept the offerings, consumes her sons, the senior priests. It is the same verb - consuming - used for the animals and the humans, sacrificed by the flame.
Endless generations attempt to get at what happened, who-done-what and why. Did they rebel, disrespect, were they drunk, overzealous, guilty of being bachelors, careless or crass. Did they leap into action when what was needed was to wait for the divine fire, to let nature do what humans can’t? Were they, like us, impatient, of little faith? Were they victims of caprice? Or: Were they the last humans to be sacrificed before animals replaced them on the altar? A big secret repressed and covered up here, too terrible to mention? Like soldiers on the battlefield defending their homeland, were they what people needed to appreciate the sacred center that is worthy of a sacrifice? Is this what God wanted or was it simply an accident? This myth is not about knowing, it invites us to probe.
Prof. James Diamond writes that the “numerous solutions reflect attempts to come to terms with a gut-wrenching narrative involving divinely sanctioned deaths of the most prominent spiritual figures, struck down violently at a moment of supreme spiritual achievement.”
What’s telling here is the silence - not just of their absent mother, but also of their father, whose speechless response has become a model of what it takes to respond to trauma and tragedy with dignity:
“Moses said to Aharon: It is what YHWH said ‘By those closest to me I become sacred and my glory felt by the people’ - And Aaron was silent.” (Va 10:3)
The silence of bereaved parents, often citing this verse, is one of the loudest there is.
Perhaps what Aaron’s silence means is not acceptable but protest. Even that was silenced, absent like his wife, like feelings, like doubt.
And so, we listen.
What else is there to say?
Today is the 100th chapter of the 929 project, this time round. This installment, chapter 10 of Va’yikra is at the flaming heart of the tabernacle, a dark secret, a mystery, painful and raw, inviting us deeper into the voyage and the revealing of what’s below the bible belt. Thank you for joining.
