The complex sacrificial system detailed in Va’Yikra wasn’t only about food, the way today’s ‘let’s get coffee’ is more about conversational connection than caffeination. The Leviticus Laws include instructions for social dramas and public spectacles that enable accountability and forgiveness for those who trespass - from plumber to president. Chapter 4 outlines the procedure for the public atonement rituals of ordinary citizens, high priests, the entire nation -- and the nation’s leaders: “When a leader transgresses, in error, by committing any of the crimes, breaking the commandments of YHWH, and found guilty:” (Va:4:22)
In the first three cases, the Torah begins with ‘if’ - such errors in judgment may happen or not. In the fourth case, of the nation’s leaders, the verse begins with ‘when’. Perhaps it’s a not so subtle and realistic religious priestly jab at politicians. Not that religious leaders are innocent of errors, either, intentional or not.
The 11th century French sage Rashi, wistful, quotes a 3rd century Midrash: “joyful is the generation whose leaders will actually go through these rituals with remorse and atonement.”
In Washington DC and Jerusalem, London and Moscow, political leaders are questioned and charged for their immorality, and alleged criminal intent. Or should be. The abuse of power still keeps headlines alive, esp when politics and faith collide in messy alliances that abuse faith and justice. How often do our leaders participated in public rituals of confession, apology, commitment to repair and change? How often did they do so in those days when the recipe for reparations was so clearly outlined?
What can each of us do today to do more towards this kind of due justice? Perhaps begin by walking this talk of accountability in our own lives, without putting our hands on the head of a bull or a chicken? Maybe invite someone to whom you own an apology for some mishap, for a cup of sacrificial coffee?
